Hollow Tree

This Hollow Tree stands in the Stanley Park, Vancouver. It's quite marvelous to look at and stand in. It measures 20 meters around. The city council for Vancouver voted unanimously to tear it down because it has become unsafe.   They chose to tear it down rather than spend 200K bracing it, attaching safety lines and hoping it wouldn’t fall and hurt someone.  A beautiful tree … gone.

'nifty-fifty'

The nifty fifty orginally was coined to mean the 50 companies on the New York Stock Exchange that were considered to be a good long term investment in the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, it has come to be applied to anything with 50 in its name.
e.g. Nifty Fifty Health Walks (for the over 50s), the Nifty Fifty Club (featuring rock and roll from the 50s), Nifty Fifty Fundraising Campaign ( give 50 pounds each to a charity) 

If describing a camera, it will mean a fantastic camera with a 50m.m. lens.etc. etc.

I feel as if someone has sprayed pepper up my nose. I am sick of sneezing. I am not alone in this affliction; I know lots of people who have never been affected before who are cursing the yellow peril this year. One of my friends reckons that oilseed rape is banned in America because of health concerns. I don’t know how true this is, but I wish it were banned in my vicinity.
Apparently, eating honey made by local bees can build up your immunity and protect you against oilseed rape pollen. I considered buying ‘rapeseed honey’, but I don’t think it was made by Northumbrian bees.
In bed at night, as my nose drips into the pillow, I fantasise about another cure for my ills.

Origin

The phrase 'The Yellow Peril' is no longer used in anger, so to speak. The threat of Oriental hordes swarming west and engulfing 'civilised' societies was a widely held fear in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. see more here

The low tide at 0630 aligned with sunrise to give me a small window of opportunity to photograph the rusted iron anchors and and part of the capstan from the shipwrecked French barque Marie Gabrielle (1869) embedded in the reef. The ship was on route from China with a load of tea when it hit the reef after being forced ashore by strong winds. This far eastern section of Victoria’s Shipwreck Coast seems to be much overlooked by travelers to the area but well worth the short detour off the Great Ocean Road.

If anyone has seen the movie “The Nanny Diaries,” you may be familiar with the scene where Annie the nanny discovers the hidden nanny-cam in the eye of a teddy bear and decides to let off some steam in a kind of nanny-cam confessional, using the device as a tell-all to report everything that is wrong with the parents’ way of raising their son.

While the scene is humorous, it also brings up the more serious question of whether or not parents should be installing nanny-cams to monitor their babysitter’s interactions with their children. Is it necessary and is it legal?
